Why it Works
Feeling is not a coat of paint on top of ârealâ product work. It is how people encode value, decide what to try next, and choose whether to return. This handbook treats emotion as a design requirementâmeasured through behaviour and memoryâwhile refusing manipulative dark patterns that manufacture urgency, addiction, or shame.

The science of product feeling
Section titled âThe science of product feelingâEmotion and cognition are coupled. Affect changes how people think under load: positive affect tends to broaden attention and raise tolerance for minor friction; negative affect narrows focus and makes the same interface feel harder (Norman and related work on emotional design). That is why a calm first success can unlock exploration, while a confusing empty state or opaque wait can freeze a session even when the underlying capability is fine.
People also do not remember experiences as averages. The peakâend rule (Kahneman, Fredrickson, and colleagues) shows that remembered quality is disproportionately shaped by the most intense moments and by how an episode ends. Product momentsâfirst value, a broken promise, a fair paywall, a recovery after errorâbecome the story users tell themselves later. Designing for feeling therefore means designing peaks and endings deliberately, not only funnels.
Appearance and craft change judgement too. The aestheticâusability effect (Kurosu & Kashimura, 1995; later Tractinsky and others) finds that people rate more attractive interfaces as more usable, and often forgive small flaws when the product feels considered. Beauty does not replace clarityâbut ugliness amplifies every stumble. Premium Positioning and Experience Refinement sit on that mechanism: earned craft signals, not decoration that hides broken jobs.
Habit and return behaviour rest on similar groundâsee Habit Formation. Context-cued routines form when a stable cue, a doable action, and a meaningful outcome repeat together. Variable novelty can decorate a reliable loop; it should not be the loop. Commitment and consistency research explains why voluntary, low-stakes declarations increase follow-throughâand why forced pledges poison trust.
Across these findings runs one design implication: agency preserves feeling. People attach to products that make them feel competent, clear, and in controlânot cornered. Name the feeling north star first; then choose Tools, Techniques, and Practices (TTPs) that earn it: shorten time to value, make waits and risks honest (calibrated trust), invite intent instead of extracting it, and measure whether âactivatedâ or âretainedâ still means the user is better off.
From usability to feeling
Section titled âFrom usability to feelingâEmotionally aware product work did not start with consumer apps. It is a lineage of humanâcomputer interaction (HCI), psychology, and design practice that gradually made feeling an explicit object of design.
Usability first (1980sâ1990s). Donald Normanâs The Design of Everyday Things and contemporary usability research (Nielsen and others) established that products fail when people cannot form a clear mental model. The emotional outcome of that era was mostly negative-space: reduce confusion, error, and helplessness. Competence and calm were the feelingsâeven if the vocabulary was âusability,â not âemotion.â
Apparent beauty and perceived ease (mid-1990s). Kurosu and Kashimuraâs automated teller machine (ATM) studies showed that aesthetic appeal strongly shaped perceived usabilityâthe finding later named the aestheticâusability effect. Craft stopped being ânice to haveâ and became part of the experience model.
Affective computing (late 1990s). Rosalind Picardâs Affective Computing argued that systems should recognise and respond to human affect. Much of that research was sensing and machine response; the product lesson that travelled further was simpler: interfaces that ignore frustration, confusion, or delight are incomplete models of the human on the other side of the glass.
Emotional design as a named craft (2000s). Normanâs Emotional Design (2004) gave practitioners a shared frameâsee Emotional Design: visceral, behavioural, and reflective. Microinteractions (Saffer and contemporaries) made the behavioural level concrete: tiny acknowledgements that turn cold software into something that feels alive.
Behaviour, habit, and growth practice (2010s). Behavioural science entered mainstream product work through habit models, commitment techniques, and growth loopsâuseful when it explained return (Habit Formation); harmful when it licensed addiction patterns. Jobs-to-be-Done reframed copy and flows around the progress people hire a product to make. Product-led growth operationalised time to value and activation as the feeling that the product worked.
Where ProductFeeling sits. This handbook inherits that prior art and packages it for builders and agents: Customer Discovery as prerequisite, Concepts as shared vocabulary, twelve strategies, and thirty-seven TTPs. It sits upstream of Impeccable (craft and execution) and beside DocSlime (docs)ânaming the feeling north star first, then the patterns that earn it, without prescribing emotional coercion.
An Art or Science?
Section titled âAn Art or Science?âBothâand the two are not in tension. Designing how a product feels is an art grounded in precise measurement and the rigorous use of TTPs. The taste is yours; the technique is disciplined.
Consider the French chef. No one reasonable would argue that a chef practising cuisine in a fine-dining room is not making art. Yet look at how they are trained. In the canonical texts used throughout FranceâEscoffierâs Le Guide Culinaire and the culinary-school curriculum built on itâeven something as humble as cutting a vegetable is codified: the julienne, brunoise, bâtonnet, and macĂŠdoine are named cuts with specified dimensions, down to the millimetre. A student is drilled on knife work on carrots and cucumbers long before they plate anything. The rigour is not the enemy of the artâit is the floor that makes the art repeatable, teachable, and reliably excellent.
Product feeling works the same way. The feeling north star is the dish you intend; the TTPs are the named cuts; behaviour and memory are how you taste as you goâpeakâend moments, friction budgets, trust movements, return curves. You measure not to reduce the work to a formula, but to know whether the feeling you intended is the feeling people actually get.
Two failure modes bracket the craft, and both ruin the plate:
- Consumed by process. Executing techniques flawlessly while forgetting the dish. A perfectly scored, perfectly instrumented flow that evokes nothing is not a successâit is mise en place mistaken for dinner.
- Lost in vibes. Trusting taste alone, unmeasured, so bias and wishful thinking pass for judgement. âIt feels greatâ with no evidence is how teams ship things only they love.
The discipline of this handbook is the narrow path between them: name the feeling, choose the techniques that earn it, and measure honestlyâso your art is grounded, not guessed. That is the whole point of the north star: grounded clarity, not vibes.
